For a hotel or condo valet, success isn't how many vehicles you can squeeze in front of the entrance. It's throughput - how many cars you can process per hour without ever blocking an arriving guest. That single shift in objective changes the entire layout.

These are the patterns that show up again and again in operations that feel effortless - ordered roughly by how much they move the needle.
Separate arrival from departure
Highest impactThis single decision does more than any other. When arriving and departing guests share one lane, they fight each other all day. Split them, and the congestion largely disappears.
→Arriving guests stop, unload, hand off keys, and check in while their car moves straight to staging. Departing guests find their car already waiting, load, and leave. Neither blocks the other.
Keep only the “next up” cars in front
The most common mistake is lining the entrance with parked vehicles. Luxury operations keep the curb deliberately clean - only the next few requested cars get premium space. Everything else stays in staging.

Separate staging from presentation
Think of it like an airport. The front is calm and quiet; the real organizing happens out of sight. Only cars actively being delivered come forward.

Design for one-way traffic
Every U-turn and crossing path is a chance for a car to block another. The ideal route never doubles back on itself.
Run a dedicated retrieval queue
Don't wait until a guest is standing at the curb to start fetching their car. Begin retrieval early and let cars flow into a ready queue.

Don't mix long-term parking with active retrieval
Condo and mixed-use buildings juggle residents, hotel guests, visitors, and service vehicles. Blend them and you get chaos. The fix is dedicated areas.

Use “hot spots” in the garage
Instead of filling the first open spot, reserve the closest spaces for cars likely to leave soon. Retrieval time drops without moving a single wall.
