Analytics · Operating signals
The wait tells you
afterward.
Retrieval time is essential because it measures the promise guests experienced. It is also late. By the time the P90 rises, the demand wave, staffing gap, or staging failure has already become service.
The distinction
Lagging indicators judge the outcome. Leading indicators create time to act.
A leading indicator is not a magic predictor. It is an earlier observable condition with a credible relationship to the outcome the operation cares about.
Use both kinds. Leading signals without outcomes encourage motion without accountability. Outcomes without leading signals leave managers explaining last night instead of changing the next ten minutes.

Pair what happened with what is forming
Lagging indicators keep the promise honest
Experience
Retrieval P50 and P90
The center and tail show whether ordinary and slow-common guest waits met the service expectation.
Quality
Exceptions and corrections
Lost keys, wrong vehicles, payment recovery, incomplete records, and guest complaints show the cost of the flow.
Economics
Labor and margin outcomes
Hours, revenue, payouts, and contract results reveal whether the delivered service was sustainable.
Leading indicators expose pressure earlier
Coverage
Demand-to-staff ratio
Open and expected requests relative to available roles can warn that the wave exceeds current capacity.
Readiness
Pre-staging rate
For known departures, the share prepared before the request window shows whether the operation is getting ahead.
Aging
Oldest open request
The oldest actionable task can reveal starvation before the weekly percentile moves.
Motion
Queue growth rate
A queue of six shrinking is healthier than a queue of four adding two requests each minute.
→Each definition must state which requests are actionable, which staff are truly available, and which pre-staging actions count.
Do not promote a correlation into a control
Dashboard ornament
OBSERVED- Moves before the outcome sometimes
- Has no defined response
- May reward unsafe or premature actions
Operating indicator
STEERABLE- Definition and data freshness are known
- Threshold maps to an approved action
- Outcome and guardrails are reviewed later
Close the steering loop
→Thresholds should be learned by property and demand cohort, not copied from a universal benchmark.
The management question
What can we still change in the next ten minutes?
Put those signals on the live operating view. Keep retrieval distribution and exceptions in the review. One set helps the manager steer; the other proves whether the steering served guests.
The takeaway: lead with conditions the team can act on, then let lagging outcomes judge whether the action worked.
