Why texting starts with a business identity.

A local phone number looks familiar to a guest. When software uses it to send business messages at scale, U.S. carriers want to know the sender and the kind of messages that number will carry.

Separate the layers

10DLC is a carrier-led registration ecosystem, not a federal texting license.

“10DLC” means a ten-digit long code: an ordinary local-format number used for application-to-person business messaging. Carriers apply registration, vetting, throughput, and filtering policies to that traffic.

Those policies are distinct from federal and state laws governing calling and texting. Carrier registration does not replace consent, opt-out, or other legal analysis.

What onboarding is doing

Brand first, campaign second, number last

01

The registration chain

1Identify the legal business sending messages
2Describe the campaign or operational use case
3Document how recipients agree and opt out
4Associate the sending number with the approved use

The EIN or tax identifier helps match the submitted brand to a real organization; exact requirements vary by entity and provider.

Law

03

What good registration cannot fix

A registered sender can still send a bad message.

Keep the actual program narrow: identify the sender, match content to the registered use, honor opt-outs, avoid purchased lists, and retain the evidence behind consent. A valet arrival update and a marketing promotion are not interchangeable because both fit in an SMS.

CTIA publishes its current messaging principles. The FCC separately maintains material on telemarketing and robocall rules. Review both layers with your messaging provider and counsel.

The calm answer

Your software is not asking for an EIN to read your taxes.

It is collecting identity data needed to register a business sender. The practical result is a message ecosystem that can distinguish a named operator sending expected vehicle updates from anonymous traffic.

Prepare the registration before launch: use the exact legal name associated with the tax identifier, a monitored website and support contact, sample messages that match the real program, and an honest description of how recipients join and leave it. A vague “customer notifications” campaign often hides several unrelated message types. Separate operational updates from marketing so the registration, consent path, and guest expectation stay aligned.

Recheck the program when the use changes. Registration is not a one-time permission for every future message.
