When a valet stand gridlocks, everyone blames the volume. But the same number of cars flows smoothly at a well-run operation and seizes up at a poorly-run one. The difference is design, not demand.

Two operations can handle the exact same number of cars. One feels effortless; the other backs up onto the street by 7pm. The cars didn't change — the choreography did. Congestion is almost always something the operation does to itself.

Arrivals and departures share one lane

Most common

When the car coming back has to fight through the cars dropping off, every retrieval slows down at exactly the moment speed matters most. One lane doing two jobs is the number-one cause of valet gridlock.

Retrieval starts too late

If you begin fetching a car only when the guest is standing at the curb, you've built a queue that can never get ahead. Start earlier and the line never forms.

A checkout time, a reservation ending, or a guest tapping “request my car” on the way down all put the car in motion before the curb fills up.

The curb is a parking lot

Lining the entrance with parked cars feels efficient. It's the opposite — every parked car at the curb is an obstacle the next departure has to navigate around.

Keep the curb clean — only the next few requested cars get premium space. Everything else waits in staging, out of the flow.

The radio is the bottleneck

“Can someone grab the gray Tahoe?” — said three times because nobody heard it — is pure latency layered on top of everything else.
